What should you know about causes of demodex mites?

Demodex folliculorum live around facial hair follicles, especially where oil production is higher. They can be associated with itching, roughness, redness, tiny bumps, or irritation around the eyelashes. The mite itself is not proof of poor hygiene, and finding mites does not automatically mean a person has demodicosis.

Rosacea can create skin conditions in which flushing, inflammation, and altered oil balance overlap with Demodex-related irritation. A clinician may examine the face or lashes because several conditions can look alike.

Wash the face gently, avoid abrasive scrubs, and remove eye makeup before sleep. Do not squeeze bumps or share towels, eye products, or applicators. If eyelid debris or scalp and facial oiliness is part of the picture, a clinician may discuss a targeted cleansing plan or Medicated Shampoo Treatment.

Arrange an assessment if symptoms persist, recur, or involve the eyelids. Treatment depends on whether the main problem is follicular irritation, rosacea, eyelid inflammation, or another skin condition.

Seek prompt medical care for eye pain, marked light sensitivity, vision changes, or swelling that makes it difficult to open the eye. Arrange a routine dermatology visit for spreading redness, persistent facial inflammation, crusting around lashes, or symptoms that do not settle with gentle care.
