Causes of continuous sneezing

Sneezing is a protective reflex that clears the nose. Allergic rhinitis can cause repeated sneezing with an itchy nose, watery eyes, and clear discharge. House dust mite allergy may be worse in bedrooms or after cleaning, while pet allergy can flare around an animal or on clothing that has contacted one.

A common cold more often brings a blocked or runny nose, sore throat, cough, tiredness, or fever. Smoke, perfume, dust, dry air, and strong cleaning products can irritate the nasal lining without causing an allergy. The timing, setting, and presence of itching or fever are useful clues, but they do not confirm a diagnosis on their own.

Notice where sneezing starts and reduce obvious triggers such as smoke or strong fragrance. Wash hands, ventilate rooms, and use a saline nasal rinse if it is suitable for you. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication is appropriate, particularly if symptoms affect sleep, work, or exercise. Avoid taking someone else’s prescription medicine.

Seek urgent help if sneezing occurs with swelling of the lips or tongue, wheezing, trouble breathing, faintness, or a rapidly spreading itchy rash. Arrange a medical review for symptoms that persist, repeatedly disturb sleep, cause facial pain, produce one-sided foul discharge, or come with a high or prolonged fever.
