Causes of constant sneezing

Sneezing is a protective reflex that clears particles from the nose. Allergic rhinitis can cause repeated sneezing with an itchy nose, watery eyes and clear discharge, often after exposure to pollen, house dust mites or animals. House dust mite allergy may be worse in bedrooms or during cleaning, while pet allergy can flare near an animal or on fabrics carrying dander. A common cold may bring sneezing with a blocked or runny nose, sore throat, cough or feeling unwell, and usually changes over time. Smoke, perfume, dust, dry air and sudden temperature changes can irritate the nose without causing an allergy.

The trigger pattern matters more than the word constant: symptoms tied to a place or exposure suggest irritation or allergy, while a short illness pattern may fit infection.

Notice where and when sneezing starts, and record exposure to dust, pets, fragrances, cleaning or outdoor air. Reduce dust with regular cleaning and wash bedding as advised for your household; avoid smoke and strong scents. Saline nasal rinsing may help clear irritants when performed with safe, clean water. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication is suitable, especially if you are pregnant, have other conditions, or take regular medicines. Arrange an assessment if symptoms persist, disturb sleep, or keep returning without a clear trigger.

Seek urgent help if sneezing occurs with swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, wheezing, difficulty breathing, faintness or widespread hives, as these can signal a severe allergic reaction. Seek medical advice for high fever with severe illness, facial swelling, severe one-sided facial pain, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.
