Causes of chikungunya virus

An infected mosquito acquires the virus when it feeds on an infected person and can pass it to another person through a later bite. The virus then multiplies in the body and triggers an inflammatory response. Fever, joint pain, and muscle aches are common presentations of chikungunya, although symptoms and intensity vary.

Chikungunya is not caused by cold weather, ordinary food, or routine contact such as sharing a room. Mosquito exposure is the key route, particularly in places where the virus is circulating.

If fever and sudden joint pain develop after mosquito exposure or travel, arrange a GP consultation and describe the timing, destination, bites, and symptoms. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid further mosquito bites while unwell so mosquitoes are less likely to acquire the virus from you.

A clinician may consider chikungunya alongside other causes of fever and decide whether testing or monitoring is appropriate. Do not self-start medicines without checking that they suit your symptoms and medical history.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, severe dehydration, persistent vomiting, unusual bleeding, or rapidly worsening weakness. Prompt assessment is also sensible when fever is severe, lasts longer than expected, or affects someone who is pregnant, very young, older, or living with a significant medical condition.
