Short answer

Water can break early when the amniotic membranes weaken or come under strain, although a clear cause is not always found.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Key action
Call your maternity unit promptly for suspected leaking amniotic fluid.
Helpful detail
Record the fluid's onset, colour, smell, and flow.
Avoid
Do not use tampons or insert anything into the vagina while awaiting advice.

The short answer

Possible contributors include infection around the pregnancy, bleeding during pregnancy, an overstretched uterus from more than one baby or excess amniotic fluid, cervical problems, smoking, and a previous early membrane rupture. These factors raise concern but do not prove why it happened in an individual pregnancy.

What early water breaking means

The waters are the fluid inside the amniotic sac surrounding the baby. Rupture before labour begins is called premature rupture of membranes; when it happens before the pregnancy reaches term, clinicians may call it preterm premature rupture of membranes.

Fluid may come as a gush or a continuing watery trickle that cannot be controlled like urine. Discharge and urine leakage can feel similar, so a maternity team may examine you, test the fluid, check your temperature, and assess the baby's heartbeat.

What to do if fluid is leaking

Contact your maternity unit promptly if you think your waters have broken, even without contractions. Note when leaking began and the fluid's colour, smell, and approximate amount. Wear a sanitary pad so the fluid can be assessed; do not insert a tampon or have sex while awaiting advice.

Management depends on gestational age, labour, infection signs, the baby's wellbeing, and fluid findings. It may include monitoring, medicines to reduce infection risk, an antenatal steroid injection to support the baby's preparation for birth, or planning birth when continuing the pregnancy is less safe.

When urgent assessment is needed

Go to maternity emergency care now for green, brown, bloody, or foul-smelling fluid; fever or chills; severe abdominal pain; regular painful contractions; vaginal bleeding; reduced baby movement; or anything visible or felt in the vagina. Call emergency services if you feel faint, collapse, or cannot travel safely.

Questions for your maternity team

Ask whether testing confirms amniotic fluid, how the baby will be monitored, whether infection is suspected, and which changes should bring you back immediately. You can also ask how gestational age affects the balance between waiting and birth, and whether medicines or induction of labour may be considered.

Questions people ask

Can waters break without a large gush?

Yes. A small, persistent watery trickle may occur, and it can be difficult to distinguish from urine or discharge without assessment.

Does early water breaking mean labour starts immediately?

Not necessarily. Labour may or may not begin soon, so the maternity team bases next steps on gestational age, infection risk, fluid findings, and the baby's condition.

Can I wait until my next appointment?

No. Suspected membrane rupture needs prompt maternity advice because assessment helps confirm the fluid and identify complications early.
