Cause of a Swollen Upper Lip

A sore, cracked, or burning surface can follow sun exposure, cosmetics, toothpaste, or lip biting. A sudden, soft swelling with itching or hives may fit an allergic pattern. A painful, hot, red area, fever, or discharge raises concern for infection. Upper teeth and gums can also refer swelling toward the upper lip, especially when chewing hurts or a tooth is tender. A clinician needs to examine the area to distinguish these possibilities; the appearance alone is not diagnostic.

Pause new lip, skin, and dental products, and rinse gently with water if irritation followed an exposure. Apply a cool cloth to the outside of the lip and avoid picking, squeezing, or puncturing the swelling. If there is tooth pain, arrange dental assessment rather than treating the lip alone. Record recent foods, medicines, bites, injuries, and procedures, along with whether the swelling is spreading or returning.

Get emergency help for swelling of the tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, sudden voice change, collapse, or marked dizziness. Seek prompt assessment for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, or a suspected dental abscess. Arrange a routine review if the upper lip remains swollen, repeatedly flares, or develops a persistent lump or sore.
