What causes sweaty feet?

Short answer
Sweaty feet can come from overactive sweat glands, heat, emotional triggers, enclosed footwear, or another condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why feet become damp
Sweat glands in the soles help regulate temperature. In plantar hyperhidrosis, they produce more sweat than needed, often on both feet and sometimes during rest. Heat, exercise, anxiety, and non-breathable shoes can make moisture more noticeable. Some medicines or health conditions can also alter sweating.
Persistent dampness softens the skin and can lead to odor, peeling, soreness, or cracking between the toes. It can also make Athlete's Foot more likely to take hold. Excessive Sweating is a useful related symptom to discuss if other areas, such as the hands or underarms, are affected.
Ways to reduce moisture
Wash and dry the feet carefully, especially between the toes. Change socks when damp, choose breathable footwear, and rotate shoes so they can dry fully. An over-the-counter antiperspirant may help some people when used as directed on intact, dry skin; a clinician can discuss Prescription Antiperspirant if ordinary products are insufficient.
For persistent symptoms, Iontophoresis is one treatment option. It uses a mild electrical current through water to reduce sweating temporarily, and a trained clinician can explain whether it fits your circumstances.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if sweating begins suddenly, is accompanied by night sweats, weight change, palpitations, weakness, or medication changes, or interferes with work and walking. Seek prompt care for a hot, swollen, painful foot, spreading redness, pus, or an open wound, particularly if you have diabetes or reduced sensation.
Questions for your doctor
Does this pattern fit plantar hyperhidrosis? Could a medicine, infection, or another health issue be contributing? How should I use an antiperspirant safely? Would I benefit from iontophoresis, and how can I prevent moisture-related fungal irritation?

Questions people ask
Can sweaty feet cause athlete's foot?
Moist, enclosed conditions can support fungal growth, but sweating alone does not confirm an infection.
Is iontophoresis suitable for everyone?
A clinician should review your health, skin condition, and any implanted electrical devices before recommending it.
