What causes pins and needles in the hands?

Tingling after sleeping on an arm or gripping a tool often settles as pressure on a nerve is released. Recurrent symptoms may involve a trapped nerve at the wrist or neck, or peripheral neuropathy affecting several nerves. Type 2 diabetes and vitamin B12 deficiency can contribute to nerve problems; hypothyroidism is another possible association. Fast breathing during panic or intense anxiety can cause tingling around the hands or mouth. The pattern matters: one hand, both hands, particular fingers, constant numbness, and associated weakness each point the assessment in a different direction.

Record when the sensation occurs, which fingers are affected, how long it lasts, and whether posture, activity, stress, or food relates to it. Arrange a GP assessment for persistent, recurrent, painful, or progressive symptoms. A clinician may examine strength, reflexes, sensation, circulation, and the neck or wrist, then consider blood tests for glucose, vitamin B12, thyroid function, and other causes. Protect numb hands from heat, sharp tools, and pressure until sensation is clearer.

Call emergency services for sudden one-sided numbness or weakness, facial drooping, speech trouble, confusion, severe dizziness, or a sudden severe headache, because these can occur with stroke or transient ischaemic attack. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading numbness, new loss of bladder control, or severe weakness.

Ask whether the distribution suggests a trapped nerve or peripheral neuropathy, which blood tests are suitable, whether medicines or diabetes could contribute, and which changes require urgent help.
