Short answer

Persistent hiccups can result from irritation of the diaphragm or its nerves, digestive problems, medicines, or an underlying illness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How hiccups happen

A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm followed by sudden closure of the voice box. A large meal, fizzy drinks, alcohol, sudden temperature changes, or strong emotion can trigger a short episode. Ongoing hiccups may occur when the diaphragm, the nerves supplying it, or areas of the brain involved in breathing are irritated. Digestive conditions such as acid reflux or gastritis can be relevant, particularly when hiccups occur with burning, nausea, upper-abdominal discomfort, or repeated belching.

What to do next

Note when the hiccups began, possible food or drink triggers, medicines, and accompanying symptoms. Sip water, eat slowly, and avoid alcohol and large fizzy drinks while arranging advice. A clinician may review your chest and abdomen, medicines, nerve symptoms, and reflux symptoms. Treatment depends on the cause; acid reflux medication may help when reflux is contributing, but do not start or stop prescription treatment without advice.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical care when hiccups continue, disturb sleep, prevent eating or drinking, or come with vomiting, severe abdominal pain, breathlessness, confusion, weakness, or a severe headache. Seek emergency help for sudden neurological symptoms or serious breathing difficulty.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which causes fit your pattern, whether reflux or gastritis needs assessment, whether a medicine could be contributing, and what warning symptoms should prompt urgent review.
