What causes itching in the pubic area?

New soap, detergent, shaving, waxing, sweat, sanitary products, lubricants, or tight clothing can irritate delicate skin. Contact dermatitis often follows exposure and may sting as well as itch. Atopic dermatitis or asteatotic eczema can cause dry, cracked, itchy skin. A skin yeast infection may cause moist redness in nearby folds. Scabies can produce intense itching, often worse at night, with small bumps or burrows. Psoriasis, lichen planus, and hives can also affect the area. The itch itself does not identify one diagnosis.

Stop recently introduced fragranced products, rinse gently, pat dry, and wear loose breathable underwear. Pause shaving or waxing until the skin settles, and avoid scratching because broken skin can become infected. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or insect treatments inside the vagina or on genital mucosa unless a clinician has directed you. Note exposures, visible changes, discharge, and whether anyone else at home is itchy.

Arrange assessment for persistent itch, sores, blisters, marked swelling, bleeding, unusual discharge, pain when urinating, or symptoms after a new sexual contact. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening pain, fever, pus, or spreading redness. A clinician can inspect the skin and choose testing or treatment based on the pattern and location.
