What causes fowl cholera?

In birds, infection may spread through close contact, contaminated water, feed, equipment or secretions from infected animals. Sick birds can become weak, stop eating, develop diarrhoea or die suddenly. The term can cause confusion because human cholera is a separate intestinal infection. People handling ill or dead birds should use protective clothing, wash hands carefully and follow local veterinary or public-health advice. Human diarrhoea after a possible contaminated exposure needs medical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Separate visibly sick birds from the flock only when this can be done safely, avoid moving birds or equipment between enclosures, and contact a veterinarian or animal-health authority. Do not eat birds that are sick or found dead. For a person with diarrhoea, replace lost fluids with frequent small sips and seek advice about Oral Rehydration Therapy. Avoid preparing food for others while unwell and clean hands and surfaces thoroughly.

Seek urgent medical care for severe diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, confusion, faintness, very little urine, extreme weakness or difficulty drinking. These can signal dangerous dehydration. Tell the clinician about travel, unsafe water, sick-bird contact and other affected people. Veterinary help is urgent when several birds become ill or deaths occur suddenly.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest dehydration or another intestinal infection, what fluid replacement is appropriate, and whether testing or public-health advice is needed. For bird illness, ask a veterinarian about isolation, sampling and safe disposal.
