What causes fetal growth restriction?

Short answer
Fetal growth restriction can develop when the placenta cannot deliver enough oxygen and nutrients for expected growth.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key distinction
- A constitutionally small baby is not the same as a baby whose growth is being limited.
- Monitoring focus
- Growth trend, blood flow, fluid and fetal wellbeing guide decisions.
- Movement change
- Reduced or altered fetal movement requires immediate maternity assessment.
Direct answer
Placental problems are a central cause, but maternal high blood pressure, some infections, certain fetal or genetic conditions, smoking and significant maternal illness can also contribute. Sometimes no single cause is found.
What the diagnosis means
Fetal growth restriction means the baby is not growing as expected because of a limiting process. It is different from a baby who is small but healthy because of family build. A measurement of the abdomen from outside cannot settle that distinction.
Ultrasound measurements are considered together over time. The team may also assess amniotic fluid and blood flow in the umbilical cord or other vessels. These findings help show whether the placenta is supporting the baby and whether closer surveillance or birth planning is needed.
What happens next
Attend every recommended growth scan and monitoring appointment, because trends are more informative than one measurement. Your team may check your blood pressure, urine and medical history, and may arrange fetal heart monitoring or additional blood-flow assessment.
There is no home remedy that makes a poorly functioning placenta work normally. Avoid smoking and recreational drugs, take prescribed medicines as directed, eat normally unless given a specific plan, and learn your baby's usual movement pattern. Timing of birth balances continued growth against signs that remaining in the womb is becoming less safe.
When to contact maternity care
Call your maternity unit immediately if your baby moves less than usual or the movement pattern changes; do not wait for the next day or rely on a home listening device. Urgent assessment is also needed for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful tightenings, severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, upper abdominal pain or feeling acutely unwell.
Questions for your maternity team
Ask which measurements suggest restricted growth, how blood flow and amniotic fluid look, how often monitoring is planned, and what findings would change the timing or method of birth. Clarify where to call at any hour if movements change or another warning symptom appears.

Questions people ask
Is fetal growth restriction caused by something I did?
Usually it reflects placental, maternal or fetal factors rather than an everyday action. Your clinician can review modifiable contributors without assigning blame.
Does a small measurement confirm growth restriction?
No. Clinicians interpret ultrasound size, change over time, blood flow, fluid and the wider pregnancy picture before deciding whether growth is restricted.
Will labour need to be induced?
Induction may be discussed when planned birth is safer than continuing the pregnancy. The decision depends on gestation, monitoring findings, growth and maternal health.
