What causes easy bruising on the hands?

A bruise forms when small blood vessels leak under the skin after an impact. On the backs of the hands, skin can become thinner and supporting tissue can decrease with age and cumulative sun exposure. Sun-Damaged Skin can help explain this skin change.

A bruise can also follow repeated household work, sports, a needle procedure or an unnoticed bump. Aspirin, anticoagulants, some anti-inflammatory medicines and corticosteroids may make bruising easier; do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. New bruises without a clear trigger, or bruising with other bleeding, needs a broader review.

For a fresh bruise, protect the area and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods during the first day. Elevating the hand can reduce throbbing. Afterward, gentle movement is usually preferable to pressing or massaging the mark. Protect the backs of your hands from sun and repeated knocks with clothing, gloves and sunscreen.

Record when bruises appeared, where they are, whether there was an injury, and which medicines or supplements you take. This pattern can help a clinician decide whether an examination or blood tests are useful.

Seek urgent medical care for a rapidly enlarging bruise, severe pain, numbness, a cold or very swollen hand, or bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure. Arrange an appointment if bruises keep appearing without injury, occur in several places, or come with nosebleeds, bleeding gums, unusually heavy periods, fever, marked tiredness or unexplained weight change.

Ask whether any medicine or supplement could contribute, whether your skin shows sun-related fragility, and whether blood-count or clotting tests are appropriate for your pattern of bruising.
