What causes dark underarms?

Repeated rubbing from clothing or skin folds can irritate the underarm. Shaving, waxing, fragranced deodorants, and harsh brightening products may add inflammation; the skin can then produce extra pigment while it heals. Intertrigo, an inflamed rash in a warm fold, may cause redness, soreness, moisture, and later darkening.

Some people develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after irritation settles. Dark, thicker, velvety skin in the underarms or other folds deserves a medical review because it may have a metabolic or hormonal association. Colour alone cannot identify the cause, and different causes need different treatment.

Reduce friction with breathable clothing and keep the fold dry without vigorous rubbing. Stop any deodorant or hair-removal product that stings, and use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. If shaving, use lubrication and a clean razor; avoid repeated passes over the same area. Do not use concentrated acids or unprescribed bleaching creams.

Once active irritation has settled, a clinician may discuss chemical peel, laser toning, or laser hair removal when these fit the diagnosis and skin type. Hydroquinone treatment may be considered for selected pigment problems under medical supervision. The aim is to address the trigger as well as the colour, because ongoing irritation can cause recurrence.

Seek review for painful cracking, wetness, odour, spreading redness, pus, or recurrent rash. Arrange a routine appointment if the skin becomes thick and velvety, darkening appears in several folds, or the change develops without an obvious irritant. Prompt care is appropriate for rapid swelling, severe pain, fever, or blistering.
