What causes a cholera outbreak?

Short answer
A cholera outbreak occurs when contaminated water or food spreads Vibrio cholerae through a community.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Rapid loss of fluids and salts
How an outbreak develops
The bacteria enter the body when someone drinks unsafe water or eats food contaminated by infected stool. Transmission becomes easier where toilets, handwashing facilities, safe water, or food storage are limited. An infected person can contaminate shared water or surfaces, allowing further spread. Cholera may cause sudden, profuse watery diarrhoea and vomiting; rapid loss of water and salts can lead to dehydration, weakness, dizziness, reduced urination, or collapse.
The presence of diarrhoea during an outbreak does not by itself confirm cholera, because other infections can look similar. Public-health teams may test samples and trace common water or food sources.
What to do during suspected exposure
Start Oral Rehydration Therapy promptly if diarrhoea or vomiting begins and seek medical advice, particularly for children, older adults, or anyone who is frail. Use treated or boiled water, wash hands with soap, eat food that is thoroughly cooked, and keep prepared food covered. Avoid preparing food for others while ill, clean contaminated surfaces safely, and follow local public-health instructions.
When urgent care is needed
Seek urgent medical care for frequent watery diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, extreme thirst, dizziness, confusion, very little urine, sunken eyes, cold skin, or unusual sleepiness. Severe dehydration can progress quickly and may require IV Fluid Therapy. Do not wait for laboratory confirmation when fluid-loss symptoms are significant.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which fluids to use, whether testing is needed, how to protect household members, and when symptoms require hospital treatment.
