What should you know about cause of calcific tendinitis?

Short answer
Calcific tendinitis develops when calcium deposits form in a tendon, usually around the shoulder, causing irritation and sometimes intense pain.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical site
- A tendon around the shoulder, often in the rotator cuff.
- Common difficulty
- Overhead reaching may become painful or restricted.
How it develops
The deposits most often affect the tendons of the rotator cuff. The exact reason they form is not always clear. As a deposit develops or the body begins to break it down, the tendon and nearby tissues can become irritated. This can make reaching overhead, dressing or lying on that side uncomfortable.
Shoulder pain and pain when lifting the arm may occur, but these symptoms can also have other causes. Examination and, when appropriate, imaging help identify the deposit and check for other shoulder problems. Read about [Calcific Tendinitis](/conditions/calcific-tendinitis/), [Shoulder Pain](/symptoms/shoulder-pain/) and [Pain When Lifting the Arm](/symptoms/pain-lifting-arm/).
Treatment and self-care
Avoid repeated overhead loading while the shoulder is irritable, but keep comfortable, gentle movement so it does not become stiff. A clinician may discuss pain relief, [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/), [Shockwave Therapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/shockwave-therapy/) or a [Cortisone Injection](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/cortisone-injection/) depending on the findings.
If symptoms remain limiting despite non-surgical care, removal of the deposit during [Shoulder Arthroscopy](/treatments/sports-and-arthroscopic-surgery/shoulder-arthroscopy/) may be considered. The appropriate choice depends on pain, movement, imaging and response to earlier treatment.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment for persistent shoulder pain, reduced movement or pain that disrupts sleep. Seek prompt care after an injury if the arm cannot be lifted, or urgently if the shoulder is hot and swollen, you have fever, or pain is rapidly worsening.
Questions for your doctor
Where is the deposit located? Could another shoulder problem explain my symptoms? Which movements should I modify? What are the benefits and trade-offs of physiotherapy, shockwave treatment, injection or arthroscopy?

Questions people ask
What causes calcific tendinitis?
The precise trigger is often uncertain; calcium can collect within a shoulder tendon and irritate the tendon or nearby tissues.
Does calcific tendinitis always need surgery?
No. Treatment is selected according to symptoms, examination, imaging and response to non-surgical options.
