What should you know about cause of arch pain?

Short answer
Arch pain can come from overuse, strained supporting tissues, flat feet, plantar fasciitis, footwear or an injury.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Walking pattern, flexibility, strength and tenderness can guide the diagnosis.
Why the arch may hurt
The arch is supported by bones, ligaments, muscles and the plantar fascia. A sudden increase in walking, running or standing can overload these tissues. Shoes with poor support, a change in walking pattern, or a direct knock can also irritate the area.
Flat feet can change how the foot rolls and place extra demand on the arch. Plantar fasciitis commonly causes pain along the underside of the foot, sometimes felt near the heel and arch. The symptom pattern, tenderness and effect of movement help a clinician separate these possibilities.
Helpful first steps
Reduce the activity that clearly aggravates the pain for a short period, while keeping gentle movement that does not increase symptoms. Wear comfortable, supportive shoes and avoid walking barefoot on hard floors if that makes the pain worse. A cold pack wrapped in cloth may ease soreness after activity.
If symptoms persist, a clinician or physiotherapist can assess foot alignment, calf flexibility, strength and walking mechanics. [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/) may be discussed when support needs are specific. When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if pain keeps returning, limits normal walking, follows an injury, or does not settle with activity modification. Seek urgent care for inability to bear weight, obvious deformity, severe swelling, a numb or cold foot, or rapidly increasing redness and warmth.
Questions for your doctor
Which structure seems to be causing the pain? Do my foot shape or walking pattern contribute? Should I change activity, footwear or exercises? Would an orthotic assessment be useful?

Questions people ask
Can flat feet cause arch pain?
Yes. Flat feet can alter how the foot bears load and may increase demand on tissues supporting the arch.
Should I keep walking with arch pain?
Gentle activity may be reasonable if it does not worsen symptoms, but reduce aggravating activity and seek assessment when walking is limited.
