What Is the Causal Organism of Cholera?

Vibrio cholerae can enter the body when a person consumes water or food contaminated with infected faecal matter. Some strains release a toxin that makes the intestine move water and salts into the bowel. The resulting diarrhoea can be very watery and may cause dehydration quickly. The organism itself is not the same thing as a virus or intestinal parasite.

Symptoms can include thirst, dry mouth, weakness, dizziness, reduced urination and muscle cramps as fluid and electrolytes are lost. Not everyone exposed develops severe illness, but sudden watery diarrhoea needs prompt attention because the main danger is dehydration rather than the name of the organism alone.

Begin replacing fluid and salts with Oral Rehydration Therapy if you can drink and have no medical reason to restrict fluids. Take small, frequent sips, especially after each loose stool. A clinician may test a stool sample and decide whether an antibiotic is appropriate; do not self-start leftover antibiotics. Severe dehydration may require IV Fluid Therapy in a medical setting. Use safe drinking water, wash hands carefully, and avoid preparing food for others while unwell.

Seek urgent medical care for repeated watery stools, inability to keep fluids down, faintness, confusion, marked weakness, very little urine, a fast heartbeat, or signs of shock. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with a serious medical condition can become dehydrated quickly and should be assessed early. Tell the clinician about recent travel, unsafe water exposure, similar illness in the household, and when the diarrhoea began.
