Tongue cancer symptoms: what to look for

Changes may occur on the visible front part of the tongue or farther back near the throat. A lesion may fail to heal, feel firm or bleed without a clear injury. Other possible presentations include ongoing tongue or ear pain, reduced tongue movement, a change in speech, discomfort with chewing, a neck lump or unintended weight loss.

These findings have many possible causes, including biting, dental irritation and infection. Appearance alone cannot establish the cause. A clinician examines the mouth, tongue, throat and neck; an abnormal area may need imaging or a tissue sample before a diagnosis can be made.

Book a dental or medical assessment for a sore, patch, lump or unexplained pain that persists, returns or worsens. Note when it began, whether it bleeds, and whether eating, swallowing or speaking has changed. Avoid repeatedly rubbing or picking the area, and arrange care sooner if a dental appliance or sharp tooth is causing ongoing trauma.

If testing confirms tongue cancer, treatment planning considers where the tumour starts, its extent and its effect on speech and swallowing. Surgery and radiotherapy are among the treatments that may be discussed; the appropriate approach is individual to the diagnosis.

Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, an inability to swallow liquids or saliva, rapidly increasing tongue or neck swelling, or bleeding that does not stop. These warning signs need prompt assessment regardless of their cause. A persistent mouth change without those emergency features still deserves a timely appointment rather than watchful delay.

Ask which part of the tongue is affected, what examinations are needed and whether a biopsy is being considered. If cancer is diagnosed, ask how each treatment could affect speech, swallowing, taste and dental health, and which rehabilitation specialists may be involved.
