Is a CAT scan the same as a CT scan?

CAT stands for computed axial tomography, an older name. CT stands for computed tomography and is the term now used more often. A referral using either name leads to the same general type of examination.

A CT scanner takes X-ray measurements from many angles while you lie on a table moving through a wide ring. A computer reconstructs these measurements into slices, allowing organs, bones, blood vessels and soft tissues to be viewed with less overlap than on a standard X-ray.

In cancer care, CT may help locate an abnormality, assess its extent, guide a biopsy, plan treatment or monitor change. The images can narrow the possible explanations, but some findings remain uncertain until they are compared with earlier scans or assessed with another test.

Read the appointment instructions because preparation varies by body area and whether an imaging contrast agent is planned. Tell the team about previous contrast reactions, asthma, kidney problems, thyroid disease, diabetes medicines and possible pregnancy. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the service gives specific instructions.

You may be asked to change clothing, remove metal objects or drink contrast. Contrast can also be injected to make vessels and tissues easier to distinguish. Keeping still and following brief breathing directions improves image clarity. The radiology team can explain what sensations to expect.

Tell staff immediately during or after contrast injection if you develop breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, faintness or sudden severe symptoms. The imaging team is equipped to assess and treat an acute reaction.

For milder symptoms after leaving, follow the discharge instructions and contact the imaging service or a clinician. Seek emergency help if breathing or throat symptoms develop. Separately, do not delay care for severe or worsening symptoms simply because a scan is booked or its report is pending.

Check which body area will be scanned, whether contrast is needed and whether any medicine instructions apply to you. Ask what question the examination should answer, when the report will be ready, who will discuss it and whether earlier images are available for comparison.
