Castor Oil for Hand Eczema: What to Know

Hand Atopic Dermatitis may be aggravated by repeated washing, detergents, solvents, wet work, or cold air. Castor oil can reduce water loss temporarily, yet a sticky layer may trap irritants against the skin. Open fissures also make products more likely to sting. Ongoing inflammation can leave darker marks after a flare.

If a clinician agrees, test the oil on a small intact patch before using it on both hands. Apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser after washing, dry between the fingers, and wear suitable gloves for cleaning while avoiding prolonged dampness inside them. Do not use castor oil on bleeding, weeping, crusted, or infected skin, and stop at the first sign of worsening.

Arrange medical advice when cracks are deep, painful, or repeatedly reopen, or when hand symptoms interfere with work or sleep. Rapid swelling, spreading redness, pus, yellow crusts, warmth, or fever needs prompt assessment for infection or another cause.

Ask whether your hand rash is Atopic Dermatitis or contact dermatitis, which cleanser and barrier cream to use, and whether patch testing could identify a trigger. Take product labels to the appointment.
