Cartilage wrist pain: what it may mean and what to do
Short answer
Cartilage wrist pain can reflect irritation or damage within a joint, but an examination is needed to identify the affected structure and cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Twisting, gripping, weight-bearing through the hand or a recent fall
- Assessment focus
- Pain location, movement, stability, strength, sensation and injury history
- Immediate priority
- Protect the wrist from movements that cause sharp pain
The short answer
The wrist contains several small joints, supporting ligaments and a cartilage structure on the little-finger side called the triangular fibrocartilage complex. Pain described as cartilage pain may therefore come from joint-surface wear, a cartilage injury, a sprain, a tendon problem or another nearby structure.
What the symptoms can reveal
Location and triggers help narrow the possibilities. Pain on the little-finger side that worsens with twisting, gripping or pushing up from a chair can involve the triangular fibrocartilage complex. Clicking may accompany irritation, although sound alone does not identify an injury. Stiffness, reduced movement or aching with repeated use can also arise from arthritis.
A clinician will ask about a fall, forceful twist, repetitive loading and previous injuries. Examination checks tenderness, movement, grip, stability, circulation and nerve function. Imaging may be considered when trauma, persistent symptoms or examination findings suggest a fracture, joint damage or soft-tissue injury.
How to protect the wrist
Temporarily reduce movements that reproduce pain, especially loaded twisting, heavy gripping and pushing through the hand. Keep the fingers, elbow and shoulder moving comfortably. A wrist support may help during aggravating tasks, but its fit and duration of use should match the suspected problem so that unnecessary stiffness does not develop.
Arrange an assessment if pain continues, keeps returning, limits grip or follows an injury. Treatment depends on the structure involved and may include activity changes, guided exercises, hand therapy, medication or specialist review. Avoid repeatedly testing a painful click or forcing the wrist through sharp pain.
When wrist pain needs urgent care
Seek urgent medical care after an injury if the wrist looks deformed, pain is severe, you cannot use the hand, or swelling develops rapidly. Prompt assessment is also needed for new numbness, marked weakness, pale or blue fingers, a cold hand, or a wound over the painful area.
A hot, red, swollen wrist with fever or feeling acutely unwell requires same-day evaluation because infection is one possible cause. New pain after a fall deserves assessment even when the wrist shape appears normal, particularly when pressing a specific bone is sharply painful.
Useful questions at your appointment
Ask which joint or soft-tissue structure appears to be painful, whether examination suggests instability, and whether imaging would change treatment. You can also ask which activities are safe, how a brace should be used, what exercises suit the current stage, and which changes should bring you back sooner.

Questions people ask
Does clicking mean wrist cartilage is torn?
No. Clicking can occur with cartilage, ligament or tendon movement and can also be painless. The location of pain, injury history, stability and examination findings matter more than the sound alone.
Should I exercise a painful wrist?
Gentle, comfortable movement may help preserve mobility, but avoid loading that produces sharp pain or a sense of giving way. A clinician or hand therapist can tailor strengthening after identifying the likely source.
Can wrist cartilage heal on its own?
Healing potential varies with the tissue involved, the location and the type of injury. Some problems settle with protection and rehabilitation, while persistent pain or instability may require imaging or specialist assessment.
