Carpal tunnel syndrome in office workers

Short answer
Carpal tunnel syndrome in an office worker means the median nerve is being compressed at the wrist, causing numbness, tingling, pain or weakness in the hand.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Nerve involved
- Median nerve at the wrist
- Typical area
- Thumb-side fingers and palm
- Desk priority
- Keep the wrist neutral and avoid direct pressure
The short answer
Desk tasks may bring symptoms to your attention, especially when the wrist stays bent or rests against a hard edge. The diagnosis does not by itself prove that keyboard or mouse use caused the nerve compression.
How the symptoms fit together
The median nerve travels through a narrow passage at the palm side of the wrist. Compression there can produce pins and needles or reduced feeling in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and part of the ring finger. Symptoms can interrupt sleep, appear while holding a phone or driving, and make buttons or small objects harder to manage.
A clinician may ask where the altered sensation occurs, whether shaking the hand changes it, and whether grip or thumb strength has declined. Neck problems and other nerve conditions can cause different patterns, so persistent symptoms deserve a focused examination rather than assumptions based on job title.
Practical changes at a desk
Keep the keyboard and mouse close enough that your elbows remain relaxed, and aim for a straight rather than sharply bent wrist. Move the mouse from the shoulder and forearm instead of repeatedly pivoting at the wrist. Avoid leaning the heel of the hand on a firm desk edge.
Briefly alternate typing, calls and other tasks when possible. A neutral-position wrist splint at night may help some people, but it should fit without creating pressure or new numbness. A clinician or physiotherapist can check the fit and assess whether exercises, workplace changes or another treatment suit your symptoms.
When to arrange medical care
Book an assessment if tingling keeps returning, wakes you, persists away from work or begins to affect dexterity. Seek prompt care for constant loss of feeling, worsening weakness, frequent dropping of objects or visible wasting at the base of the thumb, because these features can reflect more sustained nerve dysfunction.
After a wrist injury, urgent assessment is appropriate if the hand becomes very painful, pale or unusually cold, or if you cannot move the fingers normally.
Useful questions at your appointment
Ask whether your symptom pattern matches median nerve compression, whether strength and sensation have changed, and whether nerve testing is needed. You can also ask which wrist position, splint design and work adjustments are suitable for your particular tasks.

Questions people ask
Does typing automatically cause carpal tunnel syndrome?
No. Typing may aggravate symptoms in some people, but the diagnosis alone does not establish that office work caused the nerve compression.
Can carpal tunnel symptoms occur in both hands?
Yes. Median nerve compression can affect either hand or both hands, and the severity may differ from side to side.
Why can symptoms feel worse at night?
Sleeping with the wrist bent can increase pressure around the median nerve, which may bring on tingling or numbness.
