What should you know about carbuncle of nose?

Several nearby hair follicles become infected and join beneath the skin. The nose may look red, feel warm, and become sore when touched. A firm centre can soften as pus collects, but squeezing or puncturing it can push infection deeper and spread bacteria to nearby skin. A clinician can distinguish a carbuncle from an inflamed pimple, cyst, or another facial skin problem.

Arrange a clinical assessment, especially if swelling is increasing. Keep hands away from the area, wash gently, and use a clean dressing if it begins to drain. Warm, moist compresses may ease discomfort, but do not press on the nose or put antiseptic, toothpaste, or leftover antibiotics on it. Wash hands after touching the dressing and do not share towels or pillowcases. Seek urgent medical help if redness or swelling moves toward the eye, the eyelid becomes puffy, vision changes, severe headache develops, fever or chills occur, or you feel faint or very unwell. Prompt review is also sensible when pain is marked, drainage has a strong odour, or the area is not settling. Facial infections can need faster assessment than a boil on an easily observed limb.

Ask whether this is a carbuncle or another lesion, whether a sample or drainage is needed, how to clean the area safely, and which changes should prompt same-day review. Mention diabetes, immune problems, recurrent boils, medicine allergies, and any recent nose piercing or skin injury.
