The procedure usually begins with cleansing and application of a carbon lotion. A Q-switched laser passes over the area to act on the carbon and surface debris. Your skin may look pink or feel warm afterward. Texture and brightness can appear different as this short-term response settles, so photographs taken under different lighting are not a reliable comparison.

A clinician should assess active dermatitis, infection, open skin, recent sun exposure, and a history of pigment changes before proceeding. The same settings are not appropriate for every complexion or treatment goal.

Before the visit, disclose medicines, cold-sore history, recent procedures, tanning, and any reaction to laser or skincare products. Avoid picking, waxing, and strong exfoliation on the area unless your clinician says otherwise. After treatment, cleanse gently, moisturise, avoid heat and friction, and use sunscreen. Wait until the skin is comfortable before restarting retinoids, acids, scrubs, or fragranced products.

Ask the clinic for advice if redness or tenderness persists or worsens, or if you notice swelling, blisters, raw patches, crusting, or a marked colour change. Urgent assessment is appropriate for breathing difficulty, facial swelling beyond the treated area, fever, pus, or new eye pain or vision change.
