What should you know about carbon laser peel downtime?

Short answer
Carbon laser peel usually has a short recovery period, but temporary redness, warmth or dryness can occur and your aftercare instructions still matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Early effects
- Warmth, redness, tightness or dryness
- Protect during healing
- Avoid heat, friction, picking and strong skincare
- Review needed
- Blisters, spreading redness or worsening pain
What downtime involves
The procedure applies a carbon lotion and uses Q-Switched Laser energy to remove it from the skin. Because it is generally aimed at the surface, many people can return to ordinary activities quickly, although the treated area may look pink or feel warm. Dryness, mild tightness or fine flaking may follow. Recovery varies with the energy settings, the area treated, your skin sensitivity and whether the skin was already irritated. A short visible recovery does not mean the skin can tolerate scrubbing, heat or strong products immediately.
Making recovery easier
Use the cleanser and moisturiser recommended by your clinician, and do not peel or pick at flaking skin. Avoid hot showers, saunas, vigorous exercise, friction, exfoliating acids, retinoids and fragranced products until the skin is comfortable and the clinic says they can resume. Apply sun protection to exposed areas and avoid deliberate tanning. Keep makeup off until any broken or very irritated skin has healed. Before treatment, ask how long you should plan around work, exercise or an event, since visible redness can outlast the immediate sensation.
Symptoms that are not routine
Contact the provider if discomfort is getting worse rather than easing, or if you develop blisters, raw skin, pronounced swelling or spreading redness. Pus, fever or increasing warmth needs prompt medical assessment. Report any persistent patchy darkening or lightening at review. Avoid another treatment while the reaction is unexplained.
Useful recovery questions
What symptoms should I expect on the day of treatment? When can I restart my usual skincare, makeup and exercise? Which sunscreen and moisturiser should I use? Who should I contact if redness, pain or colour change worsens?

Questions people ask
Can I go back to work after carbon laser peel?
Many people can, but visible redness or dryness may affect plans; your clinician can advise based on the settings and area treated.
Can I exfoliate during downtime?
No. Wait until the skin has settled and your clinician confirms that exfoliating products are appropriate.
