What should you know about carbimazole skin rash?

Carbimazole may be followed by an itchy or red eruption, but a rash during treatment can also have another explanation. The timing, shape, distribution, recent products, and accompanying symptoms all help a clinician assess it. Conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Heat Rash, or a Drug Rash caused by another medicine may resemble one another. Do not assume the appearance alone identifies the cause.

Contact the clinician who prescribed carbimazole and explain when the rash started, whether it is spreading, and whether you have fever or feel unwell. Keep a photograph and a list of all medicines, supplements, and new skin products. Do not alter, restart, or replace carbimazole unless a clinician gives you a plan, because the medicine is being used to control thyroid hormone production. Use gentle skin care and avoid introducing new creams while waiting for advice.

Go to emergency care for blistering, peeling, mouth or eye sores, facial or tongue swelling, breathing trouble, faintness, fever, or a rapidly spreading or painful rash. These symptoms may represent a severe medicine reaction. A new mild rash still warrants prompt contact with the prescribing team rather than watchful waiting alone.

Ask whether carbimazole is the suspected trigger, what to do before the next dose, whether blood tests or another examination are needed, and how thyroid treatment will be maintained if the medicine changes.
