How canned food poisoning can present
Food sealed in a can can become unsafe if it is contaminated, poorly processed, damaged, or stored incorrectly. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and fever. Some forms of contamination can affect nerves instead, causing blurred or double vision, drooping eyelids, dry mouth, slurred speech, weakness, or difficulty swallowing. Several people who ate the same food becoming ill is a useful clue. Do not taste food from a swollen, leaking, badly dented, or spurting can.
What to do
Stop eating the suspected food and keep the container, label, and remaining contents sealed for health authorities or clinicians if requested. Sip safe fluids frequently when you can swallow and keep down drinks. Oral rehydration therapy can replace water and salts lost through vomiting or diarrhoea. Avoid preparing food for others while unwell, and wash hands carefully. Do not make yourself vomit. Tell a clinician what you ate, when you ate it, and whether anyone else is affected.
When to seek urgent care
Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing or swallowing, marked weakness, confusion, fainting, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and dizziness. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and those with significant health conditions may need earlier assessment. IV fluid therapy may be needed when drinking is not enough or vomiting prevents rehydration. Contact emergency services for rapidly developing vision, speech, or breathing changes.
Questions for your clinician
Ask whether your symptoms fit food poisoning, whether testing is needed, how to use oral rehydration therapy, and which changes require emergency review. Mention medicines, travel, shared meals, and the exact canned product involved.

Questions people ask
Should I throw away the suspected can?
Keep it sealed and follow local public-health or clinician instructions rather than tasting it or opening it further.
Can canned food poisoning cause dehydration?
Yes. Vomiting and diarrhoea can reduce fluid and salts, especially when drinking is difficult.
