Canine kinesiology tape: a guide for dog owners

A rehabilitation professional may use it as one part of a wider plan to provide sensory input or support a movement goal. Tape does not diagnose an injury, repair damaged tissue by itself, or replace pain relief, exercise therapy, or veterinary treatment.

Kinesiology tape stretches and moves with the body. Its placement, direction, tension, and shape depend on the dog's anatomy and the intended rehabilitation goal. Coat length, skin condition, movement, and the dog's tendency to lick or chew all affect whether an application will stay secure and remain comfortable.

The practitioner should first examine the relevant area and the dog's movement. Taping over unexplained swelling, an undiagnosed painful area, damaged skin, or a poorly understood gait change can hide a developing problem and delay suitable care.

Have the first application demonstrated by a veterinarian or suitably trained canine rehabilitation professional. Confirm where the tape should sit, how the ends are secured, when it must come off, and whether activity or bathing needs to change. Avoid adding extra tension or copying a pattern intended for another dog.

Check the tape edges and surrounding skin regularly. Keep it clean and dry as directed, prevent chewing, and remove it using the technique shown by the practitioner. Pulling tape quickly against the coat can cause discomfort and skin injury. Note whether the dog's movement or behaviour changes while it is worn.

Remove the tape as instructed and contact the veterinary team if the skin becomes red, swollen, hot, moist, blistered, or painful, or if the dog persistently scratches, licks, or bites the area. Toes or tissue beyond the tape that become swollen, cool, discoloured, or unusually sensitive may indicate pressure or impaired circulation and need prompt assessment.

Seek urgent veterinary care for sudden inability to bear weight, severe pain, collapse, breathing difficulty, or rapidly increasing swelling. Tape should not remain in place to see whether these signs settle, because the underlying problem needs direct evaluation.

Ask which specific movement or comfort goal the tape is intended to support and how you will judge whether it is helping. Confirm how to inspect the skin beneath or around it, which removal method suits your dog's coat, what to do if an edge lifts, and whether allergies, fragile skin, wounds, swelling, or reduced sensation make taping unsuitable.
