Other possible presentations include altered speech, a feeling that food catches, numbness, loose upper teeth without a clear dental cause, an ill-fitting denture, ear pain, or a lump in the neck. Some palate cancers cause subtle changes at first.

These symptoms are not specific to cancer. A hot-food burn, sharp tooth, denture irritation, infection, dental disease, or a non-cancerous growth can look or feel similar. A change that does not heal, grows, becomes firmer, bleeds repeatedly, or has no obvious explanation should be checked.

The hard palate forms the front, bony roof of the mouth, while the soft palate lies toward the throat. Location matters because a change farther back may affect swallowing, voice, or the sensation of food moving through the throat.

Arrange a dental or medical examination rather than trying to identify the cause from photographs. Mention the symptom's duration, changes in size or colour, bleeding, pain, swallowing difficulty, neck swelling, tobacco and alcohol exposure, medicines, and recent dental work.

The clinician may inspect and feel the mouth and neck, then refer you to an oral or ear, nose and throat specialist. A biopsy is needed to confirm cancer. If cancer is diagnosed, tumour removal surgery, radiotherapy, or neck dissection may be discussed according to its location and extent.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, noisy breathing, rapidly expanding mouth or throat swelling, inability to swallow saliva, choking, or substantial bleeding that continues despite gentle pressure. Keep the airway clear and do not place objects or loose dressings deep in the mouth.

Request prompt clinical advice if pain or swallowing problems prevent adequate fluids, a neck swelling is enlarging, bleeding keeps recurring, or new numbness or weakness develops. Urgency comes from the effect on breathing, swallowing, bleeding, or hydration, not from guessing the diagnosis.

Ask what might explain the change, whether a biopsy or scan is appropriate, how to manage pain without irritating the area, and what food textures are safer if swallowing hurts. If referred, confirm how quickly the appointment should occur and whom to contact if symptoms worsen.
