Kidney cancer and ultrasound results

The scan uses sound waves to create images without ionising radiation. It may show whether a finding is fluid-filled or solid, its position within or near the kidney, and whether urine drainage is blocked.

Terms such as lesion, mass, cyst, complex cyst, or indeterminate finding describe an appearance rather than a final diagnosis. Many kidney findings are discovered while scanning for another reason. Image quality can also be affected by body build, bowel gas, and the location of the kidney or abnormality.

If an area needs closer assessment, cross-sectional imaging can define its structure, blood supply, relationship to nearby tissues, and whether there are findings elsewhere. Occasionally, tissue sampling is considered when its result would change the treatment choice.

Arrange review of the written report with the clinician who requested the scan. Ask whether the finding appears to be a simple cyst, whether comparison with older images is possible, and which test or follow-up is recommended. Bring a list of medicines, kidney problems, allergies, and previous reactions to imaging contrast.

When kidney cancer is confirmed, options depend on the tumour's location and extent, kidney function, other health conditions, and personal priorities. The plan may involve kidney removal surgery, removal of only the affected part, tumour ablation, monitoring, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy.

Seek prompt medical assessment for visible blood in the urine, even if it clears, or for persistent pain in the side between the ribs and hip. These symptoms have several possible causes and need evaluation rather than an assumption about cancer.

Go to urgent care for heavy urinary bleeding, clots with inability to pass urine, severe worsening side pain, fainting, marked weakness, or fever with shaking chills and urinary symptoms. Such problems may reflect bleeding, blockage, or infection and should not wait for routine scan follow-up.

Ask where the finding sits, whether it is solid or fluid-filled, how certain the description is, and whether another scan is needed. If treatment is being discussed, clarify how each option may affect kidney function and what surveillance would involve.
