What should you know about cancer and kidney stones?

Kidney stones are hard deposits that can move through the urinary tract and cause severe flank or abdominal pain, painful urination, blood in the urine or difficulty passing urine. Cancer can affect the kidneys or other urinary organs, but these symptoms have several possible explanations. A kidney stone does not by itself establish cancer, and concern about cancer does not explain every episode of urinary pain. Dehydration can contribute to stone formation, while persistent or unusual symptoms need a separate review.

Arrange a GP consultation for unexplained blood in the urine, repeated urinary symptoms or pain that does not settle. The clinician may ask about the pain pattern, urine changes, previous stones, medicines and family history. Tests can include urine analysis, blood tests and imaging such as an abdominal ultrasound, depending on the findings. Drink fluids unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and do not delay assessment while trying home remedies.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening flank pain, fever with urinary symptoms, vomiting that prevents fluids, inability to pass urine, faintness or feeling very unwell. Visible blood in the urine also warrants prompt medical advice, especially when it is painless, recurrent or accompanied by weight loss or a change in urinary habits.

Ask what is most likely causing your symptoms, which urine or imaging tests are appropriate, and whether an abdominal ultrasound can help. Discuss stone prevention, hydration advice, follow-up for blood in the urine and which changes should trigger urgent review.
