Can varicose veins cause spider veins?

Spider veins are small red, blue, or purple surface vessels that form fine lines or branching patterns. Varicose veins are larger, twisted, bulging veins. Faulty valves can let blood fall back and raise pressure in leg veins; that pressure may make small surface vessels more visible and can coexist with larger varicose veins. Spider veins can also appear for other reasons, so their presence does not prove that a deeper vein problem is present.

Arrange an assessment if visible veins come with aching, heaviness, swelling, itching, or skin colour changes. A clinician may examine circulation and use an ultrasound when symptoms suggest deeper venous reflux. Regular walking and avoiding long, motionless periods may support leg circulation. Do not begin compression garments if you have significant arterial disease or uncertain circulation without professional guidance; fit and pressure need to suit your situation.

Seek urgent care for sudden one-sided leg swelling, warmth, redness, or pain, particularly if it follows travel, surgery, or prolonged immobility. Emergency help is needed for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, or fainting. Prompt review is also warranted for a bleeding vein, an open sore, or rapidly changing skin.
