Can urinary tract infection cause sepsis?

A urinary infection may begin in the bladder or kidneys. In some cases, infection and the body’s response disrupt normal organ function. Sepsis may cause a sudden change in alertness, fast or difficult breathing, clammy skin, extreme weakness, a fast heartbeat, very little urine, or feeling unusually cold or hot. These signs can occur with or without typical urinary symptoms.

The possibility of sepsis does not mean every urinary infection is dangerous. The concern is a rapid or marked change in general health, especially with fever, shaking chills, severe pain, or a known kidney infection. Older adults, babies, pregnant people, and people with weakened immunity may show less typical symptoms.

If a clinician has diagnosed a urinary infection, follow the treatment plan and monitor your overall condition, not only burning or frequency. Keep a list of medicines and medical conditions available. If you are vomiting, becoming weaker, passing much less urine, or unable to drink, contact urgent medical services. Do not delay care while waiting for urinary symptoms to become more obvious.

Call emergency services immediately for confusion, fainting, severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, cold clammy skin, or a rapid collapse. Get urgent same-day help for a urinary infection with shaking chills, severe weakness, persistent vomiting, severe side pain, or a major reduction in urine. Sepsis needs hospital assessment and treatment without delay.

Ask how severe the infection appears, whether urine or blood tests are needed, and which changes require emergency help. Clarify how to take treatment, how to manage vomiting or dehydration, and when a follow-up review should occur.
