Can Turner syndrome cause premature ovarian insufficiency?

Turner syndrome involves a missing or altered X chromosome in some or all cells. This can affect the development and maintenance of ovarian follicles, which produce eggs and hormones including oestrogen.

Possible features include puberty that does not progress, absent or irregular periods, hot flushes, vaginal dryness and difficulty conceiving. Discuss fertility goals early because available choices depend on ovarian function and overall health. Pregnancy with Turner syndrome requires specialist assessment beforehand, particularly of the heart and major blood vessels, because carrying a pregnancy may be unsafe for some individuals.

Arrange a review if puberty has not started or is not progressing as expected, periods become irregular or stop, or symptoms such as hot flushes and vaginal dryness develop. Sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or a new intense upper back pain requires emergency assessment in anyone with Turner syndrome.
