Can prostate cancer cause bone metastases?

This is spread from the original prostate cancer, not a new cancer that began in bone. It can affect one or several bones and may change treatment and symptom-control plans.

Cancer cells can leave a prostate tumour, travel through blood or lymphatic channels, and settle in bone. Bone metastases may cause persistent, localised pain, but they can also be found on imaging before causing symptoms. Tests may include blood work and scans selected for the person’s situation.

Treatment depends on where the cancer has spread, previous care, general health, and current symptoms. Options may target prostate cancer throughout the body, treat a painful bone area, strengthen or protect bone, and relieve discomfort.

Tell your oncology team about new pain that persists, wakes you at night, worsens, or limits movement. Note its location, when it began, what makes it better or worse, and whether weakness or numbness accompanies it. Do not stop cancer medicines or start supplements for bone health without checking for interactions.

If bone metastases are confirmed, ask how the planned treatment addresses both cancer control and bone-related symptoms. A pain plan, safe activity advice, and support from rehabilitation or palliative-care specialists may be useful alongside cancer treatment.

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden severe back or neck pain, new leg weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the buttocks or genitals. These can signal pressure on the spinal cord.

Sudden intense bone pain after a minor movement, inability to bear weight, or a visibly changed limb shape also needs urgent attention because a weakened bone may have fractured.

Ask which scans are appropriate, whether the findings explain your symptoms, how treatment will protect affected bones, and which changes should trigger an emergency visit. Also clarify whom to contact if pain worsens outside clinic hours.
