Can premature ovarian insufficiency cause anovulation?

Ovarian function may be intermittent rather than completely absent. A person can therefore have anovulatory cycles, occasional ovulation and an unpredictable bleeding pattern at different times.

Ovulation depends on communication between the brain, pituitary gland and ovaries. With premature ovarian insufficiency, the ovaries respond inconsistently to hormonal signals. Follicles may not mature, so an egg is not released and the usual cycle hormones do not follow their expected pattern.

Take a pregnancy test if a period is late. Get urgent care for severe one-sided pelvic pain, fainting or heavy bleeding, especially with a positive test, because these symptoms need prompt assessment regardless of the suspected cause.
