Can sweaty feet cause pitted keratolysis?

Short answer

Yes. Excessive sweating on the soles can contribute to pitted keratolysis by keeping skin damp and supporting bacterial overgrowth.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the connection means

Pitted keratolysis is a superficial bacterial infection affecting the thick skin of the soles. Tiny crater-like pits may appear on weight-bearing areas, and the feet can have a strong smell. Plantar hyperhidrosis does not itself create the pits, but persistent moisture softens the outer skin and makes conditions more suitable for the bacteria. Wearing closed shoes for long periods can trap additional heat and sweat. Similar-looking changes may come from other foot problems, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

What you can do

Wash the feet gently, dry carefully between the toes and across the soles, and change damp socks promptly. Choose breathable footwear and alternate pairs so shoes can dry fully. Avoid harsh scrubbing, picking at pits or sharing towels. A clinician may recommend a topical antibacterial treatment and a plan to reduce sweating; use products on the soles only as directed, especially if the skin is cracked. Treating moisture and infection together helps reduce recurrence.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pits, odor or softened sole skin persist after careful drying, or if the diagnosis is uncertain. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, marked pain, fever or difficulty walking. People with diabetes, reduced foot sensation or poor circulation should have new foot changes assessed early rather than self-treating for a prolonged period.

Questions for your doctor

Could these pits be pitted keratolysis or another foot condition? Is there a safe way to reduce sweating on my soles? How long should treatment be used, and what should I do if the odor or pits return?

Questions people ask

Are sweaty feet the same as pitted keratolysis?

No. Sweating is a contributing environment, while pitted keratolysis is a bacterial infection that can produce pits and odor.

Can pitted keratolysis clear without treatment?

It may improve when moisture is controlled, but persistent pits or odor deserve clinical advice because targeted treatment may be needed.
