Can sun-damaged skin cause sun spots?

Sun spots, or solar lentigines, are usually flat tan, brown, or dark-brown marks on the face, shoulders, chest, forearms, or hands. They reflect concentrated pigment activity after repeated ultraviolet exposure and may remain visible even when a tan fades. Unlike freckles, they often persist year-round. A new or changing brown mark should not automatically be labelled a sun spot, because some skin cancers can also present as pigmented lesions.

Limit direct midday sun, seek shade, cover exposed areas, and use broad-spectrum sunscreen as part of a daily routine. Avoid picking or using harsh lightening products without guidance. If you want a spot treated, a dermatologist can first confirm the diagnosis and then discuss topical treatment, freezing, or light-based procedures according to the mark and your skin type.

Have a mark checked if it is new, asymmetric, uneven in colour, enlarging, itchy, painful, crusted, or bleeding. Prompt review is especially sensible when one spot looks different from your other marks. Changes in texture or repeated bleeding need medical attention rather than cosmetic treatment.
