Can sun-damaged skin cause Bowen's disease?

Bowen's disease, also called squamous cell carcinoma in situ, involves abnormal cells confined to the outer layer of skin. Repeated ultraviolet exposure can damage skin-cell DNA over time and is a recognised setting for this change. It may appear as a slowly enlarging, rough, red, pink, or brown patch, often on sun-exposed areas such as the face, scalp, ears, neck, forearms, and hands. The appearance can overlap with eczema, psoriasis, or irritation, so sight alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Arrange a dermatology review for any patch that remains scaly, crusted, itchy, tender, or keeps returning in the same place. A clinician may examine the area with magnification and take a small skin sample when the diagnosis is uncertain. Until reviewed, protect exposed skin with shade, clothing, and broad-spectrum sunscreen, and avoid picking or repeatedly applying irritant products.

Book an appointment promptly if the patch grows, bleeds, forms an ulcer, becomes painful, or does not settle. Seek faster medical attention for persistent bleeding or a rapidly changing lesion, particularly on the ear, lip, or eyelid.
