Can pancreatic cancer cause liver metastases?

These growths are made of pancreatic cancer cells, so they are treated as pancreatic cancer rather than as a new cancer that began in the liver. Their presence helps the oncology team define the extent of disease and choose treatment aimed at the cancer throughout the body.

Cancer cells can leave the pancreatic tumour and travel through blood or lymphatic channels. Liver metastases may be found on imaging even when they cause no distinct symptoms. When symptoms occur, they can include discomfort under the right ribs, reduced appetite, nausea, fatigue, abdominal swelling, itching or yellowing of the eyes and skin.

Doctors interpret scans alongside blood tests, the person’s general health and previous results. Sometimes a biopsy is needed when imaging does not give a clear answer or when confirming the tumour type would change treatment. A scan finding should be discussed in clinical context rather than interpreted from a report alone.

The oncology team may discuss drug treatment that travels through the bloodstream, together with medicines and procedures for symptom relief. The plan depends on prior therapy, liver function, the overall distribution of cancer, other medical conditions and personal priorities.

Keep a brief record of appetite, pain, nausea, abdominal swelling, stool or urine colour and changes in activity. Bring a current medicine list to appointments. Supportive and palliative care can be introduced alongside anticancer treatment to address pain, digestion, sleep and emotional strain; accepting this support does not mean other treatment has stopped.

Contact the care team urgently for new yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, fever, repeated vomiting, rapidly increasing abdominal swelling or pain that is not controlled by the agreed medicines. These changes may reflect blocked bile flow, infection, dehydration or another treatable complication.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, new confusion or sudden intense abdominal pain. If fever occurs during systemic cancer treatment, follow the team’s emergency instructions immediately rather than waiting to see whether it settles.

Ask what the scans show, whether tissue confirmation is necessary, how liver function affects treatment choices and what the goal of the proposed therapy is. You may also want to know how response will be assessed and whom to contact after hours for jaundice, fever or worsening pain.
