Can Nail Separation Cause Green Nail Syndrome?

Green nail syndrome is a greenish nail discolouration associated with bacterial growth, often involving Pseudomonas bacteria. When the nail plate lifts, water and debris can remain in the gap between nail and nail bed. That environment may allow bacteria to grow, especially after repeated wet work or occlusive coverings.

A green nail can have other explanations, including staining, injury or a fungal or inflammatory nail disorder. Colour cannot confirm the cause, and several processes can occur together.

Keep the nail short enough to avoid catching, without pulling away attached nail. Let the area dry fully after washing, use gloves for prolonged wet work and avoid nail polish, artificial nails and harsh removers until the cause is clear. Do not share clippers or scrape beneath the plate, because this can damage the nail bed and spread contamination.

A clinician can examine the colour and degree of lifting and decide whether testing or a prescribed treatment is appropriate. The plan may also address the reason the nail separated, such as trauma or another nail condition.

Book an assessment when green discolouration persists, returns, or involves more than one nail. Seek prompt attention for spreading redness, marked tenderness, swelling, warmth, drainage, fever, or a rapidly worsening change. People with diabetes, reduced circulation or a weakened immune system should seek advice early when a nail becomes damaged or infected-looking.
