Short answer

Obesity can contribute to acid reflux by increasing abdominal pressure and making it easier for stomach contents to move upward.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Key mechanism
Abdominal pressure can encourage stomach contents to move into the oesophagus.
Night-time step
Stay upright after meals and ask about raising the head of the bed.

Why reflux may happen

Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents move back into the oesophagus, the tube joining the mouth to the stomach. Extra pressure within the abdomen can encourage this backflow, especially after a large meal or when lying down. Reflux may cause burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, regurgitation, cough, hoarseness, or throat irritation. Body weight is only one influence; pregnancy, a hiatus hernia, medicines, meal timing, and certain foods can also play a part. Frequent symptoms may be called gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

Ways to reduce symptoms

Notice whether symptoms follow large meals, late eating, alcohol, or particular foods, and keep a simple record. Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and raise the head end of the bed if night symptoms occur. Avoid tight clothing around the abdomen. If weight management is appropriate for you, ask for non-judgemental support built around sustainable food, movement, sleep, and medical care rather than rapid changes. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on antacids or other treatment and check for interactions.

When to seek medical care

Arrange medical review if reflux is frequent, interferes with sleep, causes difficulty or pain with swallowing, or does not settle with sensible measures. Seek urgent help for chest pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Vomiting blood, passing black stools, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or food sticking in the throat also needs prompt assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux, whether another condition or medicine may be contributing, and how long to try treatment. Discuss safe weight-management support, night-time strategies, and which swallowing or chest symptoms should prompt urgent care.

Questions people ask

Does acid reflux prove that obesity is the cause?

No. Reflux has several possible contributors, so persistent or troublesome symptoms deserve an assessment.
