Can nail fungus cause nail separation?

Nail separation, also called onycholysis, occurs when the nail plate pulls away from the nail bed. A fungal infection may thicken, crumble, discolour, or distort the nail, allowing an air gap to develop underneath. The detached portion does not reattach to the nail bed; it must grow out as a healthy nail replaces it.

Trauma, repeated pressure from footwear, psoriasis, eczema, medicines, and other nail disorders can also cause lifting. Colour or thickness alone cannot confirm fungus, and treating the wrong cause may delay improvement.

Arrange an examination if a nail is lifting, especially when it is thick, yellow, crumbly, or has debris underneath. A clinician may take a nail clipping or scraping before recommending treatment. Keep the nail short, dry, and gently filed; do not pull off the loose section or dig under it. Wear roomy footwear and avoid sharing nail tools.

Treatment depends on how much nail is involved and whether fungus is confirmed. Topical medicine may suit limited disease, while medicine taken by mouth may be considered for broader infection after a clinician reviews your health and other medicines.

Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or worsening pain around the nail. People with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, or a weakened immune system should arrange assessment early for any persistent nail change. A single dark streak, bleeding, or a changing mark also needs medical review rather than being assumed to be fungus.

Ask whether the appearance fits fungus or another cause, whether testing is needed, how long a healthy nail may take to grow out, and how to protect the nail bed while it is exposed. Mention athlete’s foot, previous nail injury, and all medicines you take.
