Can mgus cause multiple myeloma?

MGUS is a condition in which a clone of plasma cells makes an abnormal protein, often called M protein. It does not by itself have the organ damage that defines active multiple myeloma.

Multiple myeloma involves abnormal plasma cells that are causing specific harm, which may affect bones, kidneys, blood counts, or calcium balance. A change in an M-protein result alone does not establish active myeloma; clinicians interpret blood and urine tests alongside symptoms, kidney function, imaging, and sometimes a bone marrow assessment.

Some people pass through an intermediate state called smouldering myeloma before active disease, while others continue to have stable MGUS.

Keep the follow-up schedule set by the clinician managing your MGUS, even when you feel well. Monitoring commonly considers the abnormal protein, blood counts, kidney function, and calcium. The timing is tailored to the type and amount of protein, other test findings, symptoms, and whether results are changing. Bring prior laboratory reports when changing clinics so trends can be compared accurately.

Arrange medical assessment for persistent or unexplained bone pain, unusual fractures, marked fatigue, repeated infections, unexplained weight loss, increasing thirst, reduced urination, swelling, numbness, or weakness. Seek urgent care for confusion, severe weakness, sudden inability to walk, loss of bladder or bowel control, or intense back pain with new leg symptoms. These problems require evaluation but do not on their own confirm myeloma.
