Can knee osteoarthritis cause Baker's cyst?

Osteoarthritis can irritate the joint lining and increase fluid production. Pressure within the knee may then move fluid toward the back of the joint, where a soft or tense swelling can develop.

A Baker's cyst, also called a popliteal cyst, is a pocket of joint fluid behind the knee. With knee osteoarthritis, the cyst may change in size as joint irritation and fluid levels change. It can feel tight when bending or straightening the leg and may accompany knee aching, stiffness, or reduced movement.

The cyst is usually a result of the problem inside the joint rather than a separate injury. Examination can help distinguish it from other causes of swelling behind the knee, and imaging may be considered when the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms are unusual.

Reduce activities that clearly increase swelling, but keep the knee moving gently within a comfortable range. A cold pack wrapped in cloth may ease a flare. Supportive footwear and an exercise plan focused on leg strength and joint mobility can improve how the knee handles daily loads.

A clinician can assess both the cyst and the underlying osteoarthritis. Treatment generally targets irritation within the knee; draining the cyst alone may not address why fluid collected. Discuss pain medicines with a pharmacist or doctor if you have other medical conditions, take regular medicines, or are unsure what is suitable.

Arrange an assessment if the lump is new, enlarging, painful, or limiting knee movement. Seek urgent care for sudden calf swelling or pain, warmth or redness, chest pain, or shortness of breath. A cyst can leak and irritate the calf, but similar symptoms can occur with a blood clot and need prompt evaluation.

Rapidly worsening knee swelling, fever, marked redness, or inability to bear weight also warrants urgent medical review because infection or another acute joint problem must be considered.
