Can glandular fever cause chronic fatigue syndrome?

Glandular fever is an infection that may leave marked tiredness while the body recovers. For many people, energy improves gradually. Chronic fatigue syndrome, also called myalgic encephalomyelitis, involves ongoing disabling fatigue with other symptoms and reduced ability to manage normal activity. Fatigue after an infection does not by itself establish that diagnosis.

A clinician may consider sleep, mood, medicines, anaemia, thyroid problems and other illnesses before deciding what is causing symptoms. The course, severity and effect on daily life all matter.

Arrange a medical review if exhaustion continues, worsens or prevents work, study or basic activities. Keep a simple record of energy, sleep, dizziness, pain and activity so patterns are easier to discuss. Use gentle pacing: alternate essential activity with rest and avoid repeatedly pushing through a severe flare. Maintain fluids, regular meals and a steady sleep routine, and do not restart strenuous exercise suddenly.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, severe chest pain, fainting, new confusion, inability to keep fluids down or rapidly worsening weakness. Contact a clinician promptly for yellowing of the skin, severe abdominal pain, dark urine or fatigue that is not gradually easing after glandular fever.
