Can gallstones cause pancreatitis?

The gallbladder and pancreas drain into the first part of the small intestine through connected ducts. A stone moving from the gallbladder can lodge near this junction, interrupting drainage and causing inflammation of the pancreas. Pancreatitis often causes severe, steady pain in the upper abdomen that may spread to the back, with nausea or vomiting. Fever or jaundice can occur when there is associated inflammation or blockage. Other causes include alcohol, some medicines and high blood fat levels.

Do not try to manage severe upper-abdominal pain at home with food or alcohol. Seek medical assessment, where clinicians may examine you and check blood tests and imaging. Treatment can include fluids, pain relief, monitoring and management of the blocked duct or gallbladder problem.
