Can skin yeast infection cause paronychia?

Paronychia is inflammation or infection of the narrow strip of skin beside or behind a nail. Cutaneous candidiasis may affect this area when warmth, dampness, frequent hand soaking, or small breaks in the skin allow yeast to persist. The nail fold may look red, swollen, tender, or shiny, and drainage can occur. Other organisms can also cause paronychia, so the appearance alone cannot identify yeast as the cause. A longer-lasting problem may alter nail growth or leave the surrounding skin sore.

Keep the affected area clean and dry, and dry carefully after washing. Avoid biting or tearing cuticles, pushing them back, or using harsh nail products until the skin settles. Wear protective gloves with a dry cotton lining for wet household work, and change them if moisture collects inside. A clinician can decide whether an antifungal, antibacterial treatment, drainage, or a different approach is appropriate. Do not squeeze a swollen nail fold or share nail tools.

Arrange medical assessment if swelling, warmth, throbbing pain, pus, or redness is increasing, or if the problem does not improve after keeping the area dry. Seek prompt care for fever, red streaking, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, or trouble moving the finger or toe. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity should arrange assessment earlier.
