Can bowel cancer cause liver metastases?

These tumours are made of bowel cancer cells rather than liver cancer cells. Their origin matters because doctors plan treatment according to the bowel cancer and its pattern of spread.

Cancer cells can leave a bowel tumour, travel through blood vessels and settle in the liver. A scan may show one or several areas, but imaging alone may not answer every question about their nature or whether cancer is present elsewhere.

The care team considers the location and extent of disease, liver function, previous treatment and general health. Some people can have treatment directed at the liver, while others need medicine that treats cancer throughout the body.

Attend the recommended scans, blood tests and specialist appointments. Your team may compare current images with earlier ones and discuss the case with bowel, liver, radiology and oncology specialists before suggesting a plan.

Bring a list of medicines and note any new symptoms. Do not stop cancer treatment or other prescribed medicine because of a scan result unless the treating team tells you to do so.

Contact your clinical team promptly for yellowing of the skin or eyes, a swollen abdomen, worsening pain under the right ribs, repeated vomiting, or a marked decline in eating and drinking.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, confusion, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding, or pain that is sudden or difficult to manage. These symptoms need assessment regardless of what caused them.

Ask what the scans show, whether further imaging or a tissue sample is needed, and which specialists will review your case. You can also ask about the aim of each treatment, likely side effects, alternatives, and whom to contact between visits.
